Board

The department of history is lead by a board that, within the framework that The Board of the Faculties of Humanities and Theology has decided, has the overarching responsibility for education, research, and work for quality and development at the department. (Work order for Lund University 09-18-2015) The department’s board has twelve members. Seven of these are academically-qualified teachers (of which one of these is the prefect of the department). Two member represents other personnel. Students are represented by three members. Representatives for the personnel-organizations have the right to be present, as well as the right to expression and suggestion. The department’s prefect is the board’s chairman.

Head of the Department

The prefect, also the chairman of the department’s board, must be a academically-qualified teacher employed at the department and is appointed by the decan, on the basis of suggestions from the employees at the department, for a period of three years. The prefect is the head of the department. The prefect shall work to ensure that research and education is undertaken with high quality within the department’s operation, and work to promote the department’s cooperation with society in general. The prefect represents the department within and outside the university. The prefect is responsible for the departments economy, of all personnel, and is responsible for the working environment. The Deputy Head of the Department

The deputy prefect must be a academically-qualified teacher employed at the department. The deputy prefect steps in for the prefect in the case of abscense.

The Subject of History

The subject of history is placed as a subject at the department.Within the subject, the strategic planning of the subject takes place, suggestions for course-offering notes are done, and staffing and work for quality is done. The subject is lead by an office director. The office director is appointed by the board of the department on the basis of suggestions from the employees in the subject.   

The Director of Studies for the Subject of History  

The department’s board appoints the director of studies for the subject of history, on the basis of sugesstions from the employees in the subject, as well as defines the areas of responsibility.

The College of Supervisors for the Subject of History

At the subject of history, there is a college of supervisors with responsibility for the doctoral education in the subject of history. Members of the college of supervisors are those who supervise Ph.d students in history (both primary supervisors and the assistent supervisors) and are employed at the department, as well as deputy lecturers, lecturers/professors with permanent employment. The Ph.d students are represented by two members. The college of supervisors is capable of decisions if more than half of the members are present, including the chairman. The college of supervisors names their own chairman. 

The National Graduate School in Historical Studies

The Comittee of The National Graduate School in Historical Studies, on the behalf of the board of the faculties, has the overarching responsibility for The National Graduate School in Historical Studies. The graduate school of history is placed under the subject of history at the Department of History. The department appoints the director for the graduate school. In cooperation with the subjects’s college of supervisors and the director of the graduate school, the office director for the subject of history disperses scholarships that Lund University dispenses within the framework of the graduate school, with consideration taken to the varying subjects with a historical perspective at the Faculties of Humanities and Theology.

The subject of human rights is placed as a subject at the department. The subject is lead by a office director. The office director is appointed by the board of the department on the basis of suggestions from the employees in the subject.

Student Union

The supervision of education at Lund University is done by nine student-bodies comprised of associations of students studying the same subjects. By having student representation at all of the boards, a high quality of education can be maintained. The Department of History’s education is supervised by the Student Body of Humanities and Theology (HTS) through the student council at the department.
